This may explan why you > read via NNTP yet post via SMTP. For news.gmane.io in thunderbird (and probably more generally), if a SMTP server is defined in Thunderbird, news.gmane.io uses one of them. It appears that the only way to avoid that is to never have filled in a Outgoing Server (SMTP) in Thunderbird or using the (config editor...) button in Settings to get to Advanced Preferences and to reset and delete appropriate definitions. > > It would seem more logical to have two separate accounts, one > for e-mail all the way, that is SMTP for outgoing messages and > IMAP or POP for incoming ones, and one for NNTP: using (nntp) > news.gmane.io:119 as both incoming and outgoing server. So far, I find no way to configure an explicit Outgoing NNTP server configuration in Thunderbird. It only presents the (SMTP) option in the UI for Outgoing as far as I've found. The UI for newsgroups makes no reference to Incoming vs. Outgoing for NNTP, biased to implicitly both. But if an SMTP Outgoing server is defined it seems to be what is used for Outgoing. > Then > you should be able to read and write via Gmane alone. > >> After I filled in the SMTP server information for my default >> (and only) news.gmane.io identity, there are two selections in >> the news.gmane.io Outgoing server popup and they are >> equivalent for such a limited context: >> >> ) Use Default Server >> ) smtp via yahoo for fbsd - smtp.mail.yahoo.com (Default) > > Do not do it. For your news.gmane.io identity, use (nntp) > news.gmane.io:119 as /both/ incoming and outgoing server! No such option to configure such an explicit Outgoing server exists as far as I can find. Only if no SMTP server his defined can the NNTP server be implicitly used for sending, as far as I ca tell. > But > make sure to specify your correct e-mail address for it, as > well, (but use no e-mail related servers: POP/IMAP/SMTP). > >> news.gmane.io is the only thing that I have set up in >> Thunderbird: Thunderbird has never been used with any other >> services of any type. Trying to delete the content of the SMTP server definition gets a dialog that reports: Thunderbird Please enter a valid server name. The only alternative to that is to select Cancel instead of OK, thereby leaving the SMTP definition available and in use. The (Remove) button is disabled when there is only one SMTP definition. Using the (config editor...) button in Settings to get to Advanced Preferences and to reset and delete appropriate definitions. But one must also exit Thunderbird and start it up again to avoid it using cached information about the SMTP server. > Thunderbirds is ... special in allowing > such mixed-protocol accounts/identities with news (NNTP) for > reading and e-mail (SMTP) for sending of messages. Retrying sending ot just the Newgroup: No message in list so far (15+ min). Attempting to send with both the Newsgroups filled in and the To filled in just waits until one clicks Cancel to the progress dialog. Even then it shows it is still an active, pending send. It is common on the lists to reply both the list and the original sender and the Cc list. It looks to me like having the SMTP defined is a requirement for such a combination to be supported. I do not plan to use a configuration that is limited to sending to the list. As stands, I can not effectively send this message anywhere so I'll have to reestablish the SMTP context. . . . Now having put back the Outgoing server (STMP) information, we will see of this send works. -- === Mark Millard marklmi at yahoo.comhome | help
