From Oct'44 onward, the horrors dropped on the cities of Japan by B-29s in the form of high explosives and incendiary bombs (eg, white phosphorus and Napalm) make some people consider the A-bombs humane by comparison. That part of history is too often hidden by the shadows of mushroom clouds. The B-29s were used over other Pacific islands too.
