The problem appeared between April, 29 and April 30. (I started with a
kernel from 04/23 and upgraded the sources with 1day increment until
the problem appears)
$ cvs diff -D"29 April 1998"  -D"30 April 1998" 2>/dev/null |grep ^RCS
RCS file: /home/ncvs/src/sys/i386/conf/LINT,v
RCS file: /home/ncvs/src/sys/i386/conf/Makefile.i386,v
RCS file: /home/ncvs/src/sys/i386/conf/SMP-GENERIC,v
RCS file: /home/ncvs/src/sys/miscfs/procfs/procfs_map.c,v
RCS file: /home/ncvs/src/sys/msdosfs/msdosfs_vfsops.c,v

RCS file: /home/ncvs/src/sys/vm/vm_object.c,v

Note also that the problem is related to xdm rather than the Xserver,
because startx works.
