Except for the fact that the object directory is in the wrong place, why isn't a kernel just like any other module? If I were to create /usr/src/kernels/i386/GENERIC and move (or link) the configuration in that directory as a source cp /usr/src/sys/i386/conf/GENERIC /usr/src/kernels/i386/GENERIC/configuration with a few minor changes, it would get build very much like (and at the same time as) /usr/src/bin. installworld could then install the kernel early in its sequence.
