Check out Ekiga: /usr/ports/net/ekiga3 It is pretty good, as long as you can get your friends to use it too (or any other SIP- or H323-based softphone). BTW, it does video too, though I've never tried that since I don't have a webcam and I don't know the status of multimedia/webcamd on FreeBSD.
