Since "dd if=/dev/rda0" failed without actually reading any blocks (details of this noted in my last e-mail), I'm inclined to think that the filesystem/partition on the disk shouldn't be the source of my trouble. To avoid putting my foot in my mouth on a mailing list, I double-checked under windows. It's "FAT", according to win2k. For what it's worth, win2k didn't require any special drivers, or anything--it seems to be generic umass.
