It writes 2x, reads 6x, is rock-solid and stable, and works very well with FreeBSD. It was extremely cheap (compared to similar units) when I bought it (paid $289 back in March this year), and it's still very inexpensive. Avoid ATAPI (IDE) devices at all costs. True; there *is* a ALPHA quality driver for them, but it requires you use 3.0-CURRENT, and like I said, it's ALPHA quality (i.e. not guaranteed to work). The Sony I mentioned, on the other hand, has been absolutely rock solid and stable for me -- not a single bad disk yet! > - What software do I use to burn a cdrom? Look at /usr/ports/sysutils/cdrecord. This will allow you to burn either audio, data, or mixed-mode (audio + data) CD's. To grab audio tracks off of audio CD-ROMs (to make a "best of hits" compilation type CD), use /usr/ports/audio/tosha. > - What about CD-RW? Is this worth getting? Does it > work well? Not too sure about this one, as I've had little to no experience with CD-RW's. They are expensive (you will see cheaper ones, but these are invariable ATAPI/IDE, which you should avoid as outlined above). They do use a different type of media and a different recording format, which (I've heard that) some CD-ROM drives and audio CD players cannot read successfully; whereas, with CD-Recordables, I've never had a problem reading any of my data or audio disks on any of the players/drives I own (and I have quite a few older units). > Thanks a log!
