PXE booting gives a lot of possibilities. I use it to boot Clonezilla to back up Windows systems. That is better than dd, since only used disk blocks are copied. But neither does incremental backups. For FreeBSD and other open operating systems, sysutils/rsnapshot is a possibility. Normally run from cron, could be run manually, or automatically when the backup server is detected. It does incremental copies, is space-efficient (rsync with hard links), and only depends on rsync and Perl.
