This is probably nothing to do with the window manager, but because of not using vt(4). See the X configuration section of the Handbook: https://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/books/handbook/x-config.html I use xfce on multiple machines without problems, on both Radeon and Intel graphics.
