            Bug ID: 293243
Summary: splash (splash(4)) doesn't show up on a bios only
                    system
           Product: Base System
           Version: 15.0-RELEASE
          Hardware: Any
                OS: Any
            Status: New
          Severity: Affects Only Me
          Priority: ---
         Component: kern
          Assignee: bugs@FreeBSD.org
          Reporter: polyduekes@proton.me

I have a BIOS only system
H55 chipset
intel i5 650
no discrete GPU

i have been trying to make boot splash work on it following the instructions as
per the splash(4) manpage

i first tried the steps provided for vt since vt was the default on my
system,then i tried splash_bmp and splash_pcx with sc,no luck with
either, system finished booting without splash showing up during any boot stage

for splash_bmp,i tried the following with 16 bit rgba/rgb and 24 bit rgb bmp
files converted using gimp(converted image was
/boot/images/freebsd-logo-rev.png)

image used for splash_pcx was converted similarly

the only thing closest to splash that showed up was a ascii black and white
text freebsd orb logo using the boot_mute variable that disappears as soon as
init(8) takes over
