My good friend in South Africa, Mike Lawrie, once told me when my employer was considering networking options, platforms and such: "When it comes to unix, don't go for the commercial stuff, go for the free stuff. And DON'T equate the word "free" with inferior. You are a thousand times more likely to receive better support from the free folks on the net than from any commercial vendors". My experience today has proved him right. Wow, believe me, within 10-15 minutes of sending my plea to QUESTIONS@FREEBSD.ORG, I began receiving answers! We have dial-up Internet access down here and for some strange this afternoon, my connection broke right after sending all our mail, so that mail did not come in. I was curious so I went to examine my log files and found that the connection was not clean--the line broke, so I forced the server to dial out immediately again. That was just after 10-15 mins. of the dial that sent my plea out. And then after this connection, I couldn't simply BELIEVE my eyes what I was reading from some of the earliest helpers! You won me. Count me among your friends in Ghana and Africa. I am MOST impressed, God bless and thanks. Sincerely, John PS: The problem is solved. -- John Bart-Plange Email: sysop@aau.org Network System Operator Tel.: (233-21) 774495 Association of African Universities Fax.: (233-21) 774821 P.O.
