After "make installworld" it went away. Apparently "internal error: out of memory" really means "old ZFS userland utilities zpool(1M)/zfs(1M) aren't compatible with new ZFS kernel". Presumably something should be mentioned about this in UPDATING when this patchset hits the tree for real.
