For good measure, I tested a freshly-built GENERIC kernel as well.  It
just hangs:

No "unexpected exception/interrupt", I had to power-cycle the box.

I'm going to try 5.3-BETA1-alpha-miniinst.iso next, but I'm not
exactly holding my breath...  :(
