I *highly* suspect hardware failure, which didn't get tickled by 2.0 for
reasons of usage or whatever.

I can't duplicate it here, and I'm running an old version of -stable,
which is basically 2.1R with a few bug-fixes.

Worked fine for me.

You *might* trying getting -stable and see if it helps.
