possibley but having looked through the lsb runtime requirements, I thought it
desirable to use native FreeBSD e2fsprogs binaries, maybe linux binaries could
be used. Does /compat/linux/dev self populate under current and devfs?

Not sure if their would be other cases where native binaries would be prefered?
