I'm not sure this is actually as bad as it sounds (or potentially could be). 

This is probably legalease around feature they included for the sake of 
remaining competitive with other platforms that do the same thing (example:  
.NET).   I can't see Sun knowingly releasing updates that violate the current 
API, but I could see them using it for security updates.

Sun mainly targets Microsoft as a competitor, thereby probably trying to 
institute an auto-update system to compete with the one that ships with 
Windows XP (thus .NET).

But I agree that pressure should be applied to get Sun to at least make these 
updates opt-in.   I'm curious if this auto-updating mechanism is present in 
the source.
