Yes, thank you.... I was aware of the server-client contradiction in X =
but I got confused anyway.
To be specific: I develop database-oriented applications. The database =
resides on the server=20
(Novell, now changing to FreeBSD) in multi-user mode. On the =
workstations, my users expect=20
pretty screens. I have a large DOS application running and several =
Access databases in the=20
development stage.
So now I want to convert the DOS application to something that can =
interact with Windows=20
programs and I would like to get rid of Access altogether. I think =
Exceed offers the best=20
possibilities to do that. It would be lovely to convert all workstations =
to FreeBSD but oh,=20
the work involved scares me!
A completely different approach would be to use an Intranet, PHP and =
MySQL. But then we=20
would have to live with a browser interface, greatly inferior to what =
you can do with an good=20
development system.
And that is my main question: which development system? Any hints =
appreciated.

You've got the names the other way around. See below.

Exceed is not an X client program, it's an X server. Netscape
Navigator is an X client, xterm is an X client... If you want to
run Exceed, you don't need an X server (most probably Xfree86) on
the FreeBSD box. Just tell the applications on the FreeBSD box you
want them to connect to the Exceed box, and they will do so.

You don't mention the nature of the work you want to perform. Is =
it
editing text files? Is it working with a database client app? =
Those
have network capabilities, right?
=20
As for the text files: How about NFS?
