I think we should not handwave the fact that people do not read documentation by saying that they should. I too got bitten by having a device driver disappear while upgrading -stable and my first reaction was not that I should have read the docs, but that this was supposed to be -stable and having a perfectly fine network driver disappear between point releases is in violation with POLA. Whether my first reaction was sensible or not is beside the point. The point is that there's a valid concern and we can avoid it from happening to those not cognizant.
