I must have that option set on this 2.1 system.  Came back and there is
no boot block and no partition table.  Very messy.

I guess you could call it "SAFEMODE".  Narf, too Windows '95ish. 
Ok, how about "SAFECONFIG" or "PLAINCONFIG"?
