there are many things to blame AT&T for, but I don't think that this is 
one of them.  AT&T's hands were so tied by assorted (usually silly) 
antitrust rulings and issues that it very frequently could not even 
*do* the rational thing.  I'm amazed that they managed to get unix into 
the wild in the first place . . .
