Is this the problem: http://www.freebsd.org/cgi/query-pr.cgi?pr=ports/62845 "update of mysql40-server causes mysqld to segfault on remote connection" I've been following this specific issue and don't think it's fixed yet. If you are having exactly these symptoms, my temporary solution was to remove libwrap from the compilation of mysql-server. chris.
