I've had problems with freebsd with it not picking up the second
IDE bus when there wasn't a second device on the first bus.

Most recently on a P133 with two disks, I tried to put one per channel
and the second bus wasn't found. I just moved the second disk to
the first bus and disabled the 2nd IDE bus competely (all the speed
dependant things were on scsi disk).
