Is there any compelling reason to maintain two versions of this file? The only differences between them seem to be due to bitrot (some i386-specific things have been added to i386, but a lot of the stuff in the alpha file is i386-only anyway). IMO we should just have the one file, and denote machdep stuff appropriately.
