OK, I've done that, plugging speakers or headphones directly into the
lineout of the TV card, and still no sound. And I tried each with and
without Audio Internal selected.

Should I really be hearing something when plugging in directly? 
If so, then it is easy to see from this that the problem is with
working the TV tuner card, not the sound card.


Someone else suggested putting
 #define bootverbose 1                                                           
at the begginning of /usr/src/sys/dev/bktr/bktr_reg.h
which I did, and after booting the new kernel I don't see
anything more being logged.

Below is the output of fxtv -debug startup in case it gives clues.
It might be reasonable to give up about now, but has anyone got
anything else to try after seeing these results?
