By Jove, you're right! I simply took defaults, and have not noticed
the defaults were different. 

However, the 2 boxen I'm doing these things on are on our Internet DMZ,
and are in a (cold and noisy) machine room. I'm doing this via telnet
from my desktop: are the console drivers involved?
