Some IDE drives I've seen don't distinguish "master" and "single" modes. If your drive doesn't have a jumper setting for "single" try "master" in preference to "slave". IDE is implemented in cheap and nasty ways. Don't forget to hate it even as you buy it for cheapness! Giles
