At least 'monospaced' make obvious difference for programs which search 
monospaced fonts, like firefox, etc. For "book" and "m" I don't exactly 
remember where they are used.

ttmkfdir without -p option (and pango) simple can't fetch this information 
from the font and use standard (wrong) placeholders.

In few words, the difference is correct/incorrect description of the 
minor font parameters.

I mention you need to strip it out under number 1) in some of my replies:
