it might be worth to talk to ted tso about this - i vaguely
remember him talking about some small optimisations and fixes
he has found while writing the ext2 fsck ... i am not shure
if all of those ideas made it back to the bsd fsck ... at least
worth a check i think

p.s.: ted tso is the e2fs utils maintainer for linux - should
      be easy to find it's email adress (i'm offline right now
      so i can't) - i think he is at valinux now ...
