Subject: Change permissions on mount point?

I'm not sure why 4.4BSD does this. When mounting a MFS filesystem on a
mount point with say 644 permission, the mount point changes to 1777. I
have observed this with FreeBSD, BSD/OS and OpenBSD.

Does anyone know why this is?
