FreeBSD uses the ports system to provide software like KDE. This allows you to 
install software from binary packages and also to automatically install it 
from source. The latest version of the "ports tree" is independant of the 
latest version of FreeBSD, so you can update KDE without updating your whole 
system. The latest version of the ports tree contains KDE 3.0.3. See the 
FreeBSD handbook for more info on ports
