A small correction - few times a week I update ports _tree_. I decide
later which installed ports are to be upgraded.

I upgrade instantly:
-  if this upgrade is absolutely necessary (security fixes are, for example)
-  if the port in question is commonly used by me (say browser, email
client, etc.)
- any libraries on which ports being upgraded depends

The big ones (say kdelibs) are upgraded only if necessary, the rest "as
it happens" but usually it doesn't take long.
