I'd like to see the current xntp upgraded to ntp4 (or even ntp3, if that's as far as folks are willing to go). The new version is called "ntp" because Dave Mills decided it was time to get rid of the 'x'. I never understood why the "x" was there in the first place. The latest ntp4 code is *not* export restricted. It only uses md5. If the new version is put into contrib in the same way I ported am-utils to contrib, then keeping the ntp code up-to-date will be trivial. I gather several folks are helping collaborate on the new PPS api, which will also be helpful/useful.
