I still create my own .kbd file to do what I want. the us.unix has several oddities, like swapping hte <ESC> key with the accent grave that I don't care for. I even re-map the CapsLock key on my Windows system. The war may be over, but my little battle will end only when I can't hack a keyboard layout any more. I will also mention that Gnome has the re-mapping available in System->Preferences->Keyboard Layout Options. In fact, you can either swap CapsLock and Ctrl_L or replace CapsLock with Ctrl_L.
