The best way I've found to approach this potential dilemma is to first choose
whichever install option pleases you, i.e.; x-developer or regular user w' x
windows, include a few extra packages that you've already heard about or that
interest you.  This shouldn't be too difficult, since the packages are listed
by catagory.  Then later, after you've successfully installed FreeBSD, you can
do some research on different packages (choose which one's are of interest)
and install them later with /stand/sysinstall.  Also, if I remember correctly,
each package included on the CD ROM set includes a brief description of what
each package is/does.
