Bingo! kldload snd_ess does in fact also load snd_sbc and snd_pcm, and it all works. Apologies, I was mislead by the fact that in the kernel just has "options pcm" without any further fuzz. So yes: some machines require a kernel with PNPBIOS even when sound modules can be kldload'ed. I presume these are typically boxen without knob to disable the PnP BIOS. Still I wonder whether sound on -CURRENT will do on such a box... Thanks all for sharing! Helge
