The 5.4 generic kernel (and the one sans acpi) cannot be run on the HP zv5000 (i386 or amd64) series laptops. Once the kernel is loaded into memory, the machine immediately powers off. Several people have experienced this. The NetBSD 2.0.2 and OpenBSD 3.7 generic kernels work fine. All 2.6.7-2.6.13 linux kernels work. 

I qemu'ed a i386 install only to have the same behavior when booting freebsd off the hard disk. 

Sorry I can't provide a dump or anything. =(.
