I just did a dump over the network via ftp using the command: put "|dump -0uaLf - /var | gzip -1" var.dump.gz /var is a UFS2 FS with soft-updates, and the system is 5.0-RELEASE. I got a short pause, maybe 5 seconds, and then the system rebooted spontaneously. I didn't see any messages, I was in X at that time. I also didn't find anything unusual in the system log, but /var did contain the following file after reboot and BG fsck finished: -r-------- 1 root wheel 2097152000 25 Feb 10:56 .dump_snapshot I repeated the same dump after the system was back up (after removing the snapshot), and all went well this time. Does this sound like a known problem? -- Regards, Georg. -- Georg-W.
