I doubt it will be helpful. Such decisions should be made by the author on early states
of development, when he sees that the new version is going to be API/ABI incompatible
with oldest releases. Now, when the software is in pre-release stage, it could be too
hard for author to make such a change.

I wholeheartedly agree with you, but we certainly can't leave it "as it" just because the
author don't care (for example: gtk/glib case, iconv case etc.).

11 ports is not a small number. Some people may rely on some of these ports.
Particularly, I use xls2xml and certainly don't want to loose it ;).

Probably we should take slightly different approach: when gnome1.4 is released we will
modify old libxml to append '1' to its all pieces and will modify those unhappy 11 ports
accordingly.
