I doubt it will be helpful. Such decisions should be made by the author on early states of development, when he sees that the new version is going to be API/ABI incompatible with oldest releases. Now, when the software is in pre-release stage, it could be too hard for author to make such a change. > Making (substantial) local modifications to the libxml2 port, only > to then rip them out again once libxml dies sounds like needless > work, which should really be done by the author. I wholeheartedly agree with you, but we certainly can't leave it "as it" just because the author don't care (for example: gtk/glib case, iconv case etc.). > Just for reference, excluding those ports that are part of the GNOME > metaport, which we'll assume will be appropriately updated on a > switchover, I count only 11 ports that have direct dependencies > on textproc/libxml (and thus assume that they'd have to be modified > to use libxml2). 11 ports is not a small number. Some people may rely on some of these ports. Particularly, I use xls2xml and certainly don't want to loose it ;). Probably we should take slightly different approach: when gnome1.4 is released we will modify old libxml to append '1' to its all pieces and will modify those unhappy 11 ports accordingly. -Maxim To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe cvs-all" in the body of the message
