At home I just replaced my 3-com hub with an 8-port d-link
switch and then ran some tests which I found interesting
and unexpected:

transferring a test 650 meg file (a fbsd 4.3 install iso image) from
my Power Mac G4 to my
FreeBSD server via the new switch took 1:27 via Fetch (an FTP client
for the mac)
but only took about 1:05 via appletalk. My FreeBSD home directory was mounted
as an apple volume via the chooser.

my assumption was that the Appletalk/Netatalk combo would be slower than
standard ftp via Fetch.

When I tried these same tests with the hub connected I gave up interest
in timing it because it was transferring so slow compared to the switch.
It was evident that the switch was just blowing it away.

Hope this helps.

Jim
