Spurious whitespace may result in line breaks that are totally unwanted, which may be silly in places like this, for example: <a href="uri">Some text that will not wrap correctly right about here <em>[1]</em></a> This depends on the browser, of course, but it's one of those things I tend to notice in many online documents. It always looks ugly.
