Wouldn't you know that as soon as I tried to duplicate the trouble again
so I could truss or ktrace it, it stopped happening entirely. What -was-
causing a problem nearly 100% of the time has now gone to not causing
 trouble at all.

Unfortunately I can't keep running with libpthread because of
threads/84778, so I can't wait to see if the trouble surfaces again. It
may have been a fluke or just the way the box was configured that day.
(I've been moving sites from another box to this one, and in the process
there have been any number of hostname/DNS changes.)
