I don't recall seeing anything to the effect of "death before 5.6",
and any complaints about backwards-compatibility pretty much expired a
year or so ago, as you've already noted, so I'd say it's just resource
constrained at this point.  I also don't think it needs to become a
core issue unless -arch devolves into flames over it or something, an
event I don't see happening.
