I'm not sure what your question is;
- the machine had problems with the disks when your were running
5.4-release
- the machine works when you are running 5.4-stable

A lot of fixes, improvements and some new features are put into -stable
as time passes after a -release. This is normal, and therefore it is
always a good idea to try -stable if -release doesn't work for you.
People who want a minimum of changes often track -security, that is a
branch who only getsd security-related fixes, no new features at all.
